Finding the best technique to moisturize your healthy natural hair can be a challenge!
But never fear, we are here to provide you with a simple guide to a tried and true technique for hair moisture... the LOC Method.
What is the LOC Method?
The LOC Method is a technique that naturalistas use for moisturizing their curly natural hair. LOC is actually an acronym that stands for "Liquid, Oil, Cream," and the letters are ordered in the sequence that products should be applied.
A similar technique, called the LCO method, uses the same concept as LOC but changes the sequence of product application to "Liquid, Cream, Oil."
Why use the LOC Method on natural hair?
Depending on your hair type (we will get to that in a moment) natural hair can sometimes have trouble retaining moisture. The theory behind the LOC Method is that hair should be hydrated first with water, or a water-based liquid, and then sealed with oil and cream.
Water is essential to hair’s hydration but water alone will easily evaporate from strands, leaving them feeling dry. The purpose of applying the oil and cream after the liquid is to seal the hair’s cuticle and prevent the loss of hydration.
What hair types benefit from the LOC Method?
The LOC Method can be beneficial for multiple hair types, but probably works the best for those with high porosity hair. Porosity refers to the hair's ability to absorb moisture.
People with low porosity hair have naturally sealed hair cuticles, meaning they may struggle with getting moisture into their strands because the cuticle is closed. But once their hair is moisturized, those with low porosity hair can often go a long while without having to add more moisture.
Conversely, people with high porosity hair have open cuticles. Damaged hair is usually more porous, but people can also have high porosity hair naturally. Those with high porosity hair struggle with retaining moisture and find themselves having to remoisturize their hair often. Layering products and sealing the hair’s cuticles with cream and oil will probably yield the best results for those with high porosity hair.
How to apply products in the LOC Method?
In the LOC Method, products are layered sequentially in the order of the letters.
- First is the liquid, which can be water or a water-based liquid hair product, like the Hy-Fresh Conditioning Spray.
- Next an oil can be layered on top. The Herbal Infused Hair & Scalp Oil is a Bask & Bloom Essentials fan favorite.
- Finally, the More Moisture Cream is creamy and intensely hydrating, making it the perfect moisturizing cream to use as the last step in the LOC Method.
NOTE: If you are following the LCO Method instead, you would simply reverse the order of the oil and cream to layer liquid, then cream, then oil.
